You are invited to join with us this coming Sunday the 11th Jan 2026, for this month's brekkie run - this time to the "Umami Tap & Smokehouse", situated on the R511 headed toward Hartbeespoort, West of Pretoria.

Visiting Umami Tap and Smokehouse in Hartbeespoort is a unique experience. This ‘gastro pub’ aims to treat visitors’ taste buds to good food and good beer in a rustic and relaxed setting on Saartjiesnek.

“I have always had a passion for the craft beer industry. I am a craft brewer and a big foodie – I love great food. With Umami Tap and Smokehouse, I combined the two and the focus is on quality. Our reviews show that,” says owner Herman Smit.

Umami specialises in mouthwatering smoked meat dishes. “Our smoked meat is definitely the main attraction, especially the brisket and beef rib. We have also introduced a Small Plate section on the menu to introduce clients to our dishes.” Smoked dishes are not the only attraction, the wood-fired pizzas are to drool over, not to forget the scrumptious burgers.

“I think what makes us unique is that we make everything ourselves. We smoke the meat, we make our own sauces, patties and even chips. And quality is always the first consideration.”

Umami, meaning “delicious savoury taste” in Japanese, is recognized as the fifth basic taste, alongside sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. It’s characterized by a savoury, meaty, or broth-like flavour.

For around 60-80 bucks you could get either a traditional breakfast or a breakfast bun as a special order, not on the menu. All meals & drinks to be settled direct with the waitrons.

All cells will collect at the N14 Total Energies Petroport garage, in the Pretoria direction (GPS coordinates are: 25°57'29.8"S 27°57'03.7"E).

We will gather for the briefing, with group departure time at 09h00. We should arrive at the venue at about 09h30 after a 35 km run north-east along the N14 and then along a bunch of scenic country roads and finally to the venue on the R511. Venue GPS coordinates are: 25°45'23.9"S 27°55'00.0"E.
